Joseph Goto (1916–1994) Hilo, Hawaii born

Sculptor - known for his welded steel sculptures.

As an Artist - Joe Goto drew from the force that informed the terroir of the island he was born on - a place where molten liquid landscapes gave rise to fresh land…new frontiers situated at the edge of creation.

The Big Island is the home of 5 major volcanoes: Kilauea, Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea, Hualalai and Kohala. Mauna Loa is the largest active volcano on Earth.

In the late 1940s, Goto after learning welding while in military service he translated his skills to an art practice. He studied sculpture at the Art Institute of Chicago followed by holding teaching positions at Brandeis University, Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Michigan and the Rhode Island School of Design.

Goto's sculptures range from table-top size to large outdoor public pieces.
